Charlie Sheen is no longer required to pay child support to ex-wife Denise Richards, a source said. According to documents obtained by PEOPLE, a judge in Los Angeles County court Monday adjusted the child support payment to “zero dollars per month” beginning August 1, 2018.

Former spouses, Sheen, 56, and Richards, 50, share daughters Sami, 17, and Lola, 16.

Richards was absent from the courtroom throughout the hearing. She stated on Instagram Friday that she was traveling for work and that “it’s hard being away from home and my family.”

“Charlie had pushed dates in court with Denise for years, so she didn’t expect a ruling to happen, let alone when she was out of town on a work trip,” an insider told HollywoodLife. “She was shocked, to say the least, and thinks Charlie used that to his advantage.”

“Lola does not live with Charlie. She lives with both of her parents and stays with Charlie when Denise is out of town. When Denise is back, Lola will be with her,” the source clarified. “This is very disappointing for Denise, but also not surprising. Charlie is pitting the girls against their mother, which is horrible.”

However, an insider familiar with the case tells PEOPLE that Richards “has known about the court date for six months.”

As Page Six revealed, Sami stated in TikTok videos last month that she moved out of Richards’ home and into Sheen’s, whining about being “stuck” at her mother’s. The adolescent stated that she “finally moved out of the hell house, had a spiritual awakening.”

According to the source, Sami has been living with Sheen since July, not April, contrary to court records.

“Denise loves Sami very much, and Sami loves her. Denise is very saddened by the entire situation. She’s a mother who wants to protect her kids,” adds the source. “They need structure and rules, and Charlie is very permissive. Denise just wants the best for them.”

Last month, a source spoke to PEOPLE and shared that Richards “set normal rules that any parent would be setting,” but Sami remained resistant.

“She’s a mom and a parent, and there are rules. [Sami] didn’t want to follow the rules,” said the source, adding, “Charlie didn’t support implementing Denise’s rules. He has a different way of parenting, and Sami decided to live with her dad. Denise loves her daughter very much, and she’s saddened by the situation.”

Richards and Sheen met while filming the film Good Advice in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2001, when the actress appeared as a guest star on Charlie’s previous sitcom Spin City, that a romance blossomed. They tied the knot in June 2002. By March 2005, Denise had filed for divorce.
