Then another breakthrough role in 2022 was his portrayal as a serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the miniseries of Netflix’s Dahmer- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. It is the story of a serial killer convicted of 15 murder charges and sentenced to almost 1000 years in prison after killing 17 men from 1978 to 1991. Peters received much positive feedback on this project as he worked on it.
At first, Peters wasn’t sure if he would take the role of a serial killer. He also knew that the story was very dark and challenging for him as an actor. He said that when he received the script, he immediately watched Dahmer’s interview in 1994, ‘Dateline,’ to understand the psychology behind his behavior, read biographies, interviews with psychologists and detectives, and even the 1992 police report containing Dahmer’s confession. Peters prepared for four to six months mentally and physically for the role. He led weights around his arms and lifted them in his shoes, so he got the physical appearance of Jeffrey Dahmer apart from his behavior. Peters also Dahmer’s shoes, jeans, and glasses, and he even put a cigarette in his hands most of the time to copy the nature of the character. Peters also shared that he worked with a dialect coach to get his voice, how he spoke, and speech patterns, especially during the private moments of his life or whenever he wasn’t conscious about himself or interviewed.
Although they received good feedback, the writer also received comments that Ryan Murphy did not ask for the consent of the victims’ families and friends who were killed by Dahmer. Still, he slammed the issues, and they did a lot of research for three-and-a-half years and contacted the families and friends of the victims to get information for the series. Murphy said that 20 responded to their invitation and were all cooperative.
There were rumors in 2010 that Peters and Pixie Geldof, the lead singer of Violet, were dating. Though the two did not confirm nor deny the speculations. He also dated Alexia Quinn, but they separated as he was busy filming the Adult World.
After shooting the said film, he dated Emma Roberts in 2012. The couple was in an on-and-off relationship but was engaged in 2014. Their on-and-off relationship continues, but they did not get back together on their third split in 2019. There were reports that the pair split because of their toxic relationship. In one incident, while they were at a hotel in Canada, someone reported a dispute in their room and called the police. The pair had a heated argument and hurt each other. Police officers arrested Roberts because of Peters’ injuries. However, he did not file any charges as they had a misunderstanding.
The actor also dated Alexandra Breckenridge, Kayle, and Halsey. Halsey and Peters separated on March 2020.
