John Cusack, a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan, was in attendance to see the White Sox defeat the Houston Astros 12-6 at Guaranteed Rate Field, extending their lead atop the American League Central standings. Dave Williams of Barstool Sports challenged him after the game, who took issue with the actor’s appearance.
“I can like whoever I want,” Cusack said Williams, who has stated that he is a fan of both the Cubs and White Sox.
Cusack then proceeded to quiz Williams on White Sox trivia.
When Williams answered incorrectly, Cusack said, “That proves your ignorance.”
“We’ll have to agree to disagree,” Cusack concluded the conversation.
However, Williams then tweeted, “John Cusack can suck my balls.”
Following that tweet, the actor was forthright. Cusack referred to Williams as a “pathetic little troll” and a “sweaty belligerent punk” who confronted him only in the hope that video of the encounter would go viral.
“He’s not a Sox fan,” the actor replied to a supporter, adding that Williams “knows nothing about the Sox I asked him. He’s a click bait a–hole.”
The incident’s video footage has been seen over 2 million times, and even actor Patricia Arquette has weighed in.
“Stop this,” she tweeted in reply to the video on Twitter. “This is a bad example to kids and not in the spirit of baseball. You don’t get to decide who can cheer for who.”
Cusack responded to Arquette in a since-deleted tweet, writing: “You know what’s bad, Patricia, a bad example? When a belligerent sweaty asshole invades your personal space with foul breath — spewing childish gibberish — when supporting your city and enjoying a baseball game.”
“He really is a foul little boy,” Cusack added.
Monday’s American League Division Series Game 4 between the White Sox and Astros has been delayed until 1:07 p.m. Tuesday in Chicago due to inclement weather. Houston leads the best-of-five series 2-1.
