MMA fighter Conor McGregor spoke with Entertainment Tonight after nearly brawling with rapper Machine Gun Kelly on the red carpet at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. He stated that “absolutely nothing” happened and that he does not fight “little vanilla boy rappers.”
“Absolutely nothing. I don’t know. He showed up, and I don’t know. I don’t know the guy,” answered McGregor when the outlet pressed him for information on the events leading up to the altercation.
“Nothing happened with me; I only fight real fighters, people that actually fight, you know what I mean,” he continued. “I certainly don’t fight little vanilla boy rappers. I don’t even know the guy. I don’t know anything about him, except that he’s with Megan Fox.”
Kelly refused to comment on the “scuffle” while chatting with Variety’s Marc Malkin backstage and annoyingly shielded Malkin’s mic. “We’re not allowed to say,” Fox pleaded.
Following the red carpet incident, a source told PEOPLE that McGregor, who was a presenter at the award presentation, requested a photo with Kelly, but the star’s crew declined his request.
“Conor went in on it a little bit,” the insider explained, saying that the fighter dropped his walking cane before retrieving it and swinging it toward the direction of Kelly.
Kelly’s representative did not immediately react to a request for comment, while McGregor’s representative denied her client requested a photo with the singer.
“Conor and Dee are in their seats enjoying the show. Conor appreciates all his fans,” remarked McGregor’s representative. “Conor does not know MGK other than someone who attended his last fight.”
A video posted on Twitter by a VMAs attendee appeared to show McGregor lunging at Kelly and shouting at him while security guards pulled him back.
