Piers Morgan’s Chat Show is Failing

Everyone knows Piers Morgan- the English journalist turned TV Personality. Readers may have noticed the advertisements for his new flagship television show, funded by right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Mr. Murdoch has had a stranglehold on the UK Media for over 30 years, having shares in or owning some of the country’s most popular information sources through his company News International. Including The Times, the now defunct News Of The World, and, for most of its life, Sky TV and its news arm Sky News.

In 2016, Murdoch’s News tried to purchase Sky TV entirely. During the process, they became implicated in a conduct scandal after journalists at NOTW were found guilty of hacking the phones of various people in the public eye, such as politicians, celebrities, and royals.

An investigation revealed that their victims included an abducted 16-year-old and the victims of the 7/7 terrorist attack. The paper was subsequently closed after 168 years in print, and News International was forbidden from buying the rest of Sky, for now.

Piers Morgan was also embroiled in the phone hacking scandal, as he was the editor of The Daily Mirror, which printed stories from hacked phones. He claims to have no knowledge it was happening, even after warning various celebrities about it.

In 2018, 21st Century Fox (another Murdoch company) attempted to increase its shares and buy out Sky TV. The Sky News purchase was forbidden by the UK’s Monopoly regulator, after concerns of Murdoch’s influence over the Great British media. 21CF was eventually outbidded by Comcast in a blind auction.

The Murdochs were left with no influence in the television sector, and print was dying a slow and painful death. With the rise of social media, owning a print newspaper started becoming costlier and costlier.

They had holdings in a popular radio station called ‘TalkRadio.’ They slowly worked on launching a new channel through this brand, and on the 10th of April, 2022, TalkTV was born.

Piers Morgan was hired as the Prime Time talk show host – but ratings bombed. On the 1st of May, they recorded 0 on the Broadcasters Audience Research Board metrics.

Their closest competitor records nearly double their views, and Piers has been here before.

His ill-fated USA talk show Piers Morgan Live garnered just 50,000 viewers before being axed by CNN in 2014.

Morgan’s new talk show is gaining traction on social media, but you have to factor in that many of those views can be people laughing at you.

Views, especially on the internet, can only marginally be used as a prediction for popularity because in most cases, we have no idea in which context people are viewing them.

However you measure it, Piers is having a rough time.
