Popeyes Seeks to End Chicken Wars by Donating 1 Million Chicken Nuggets Purchased from Its Competitors

Popeyes is requesting a halt to the chicken battles. After selling out of their incredibly famous chicken sandwich two years ago and igniting a fun spat with their competitors, Popeyes is about to offer another that is sure to have customers lining up for a taste.

Beginning Tuesday, the fast food company added chicken nuggets to its menu. The nuggets are covered in the same batter as their famous sandwich. The newly announced menu item is currently available in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

Popeyes is launching the “We Come in Piece, 8 Piece” donation campaign to promote the new nuggets. Through the Popeyes Foundation, the chain will purchase the monetary equivalent of one million nuggets from competitors such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, and Burger King, and will donate the proceeds to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

Customers may also participate, since Popeyes has pledged to match donations made through the Popeyes Foundation’s website up to $25,000.

Popeyes entered the chicken sandwich battles in 2019, launching its own sandwich and taking on Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s, and others. The fast food restaurants traded barbs on social media, such as when Popeyes reacted to a Chick-fil-A tweet praising their “original” sandwich with the phrase “y’all good?”

Wendy’s later added, “Y’all out here fighting about which of these fools has the second best chicken sandwich.”

Popeyes responded as follows: “Sounds like someone just ate one of our biscuits. Cause y’all looking thirsty.”

Wendy said, “lol, guess that means the food’s as dry as the jokes.”

However, Popeyes hopes to put any lingering ill will behind them with their new campaign. “The launch of our Chicken Sandwich was incredible, and we’re humbled by the amount of love and positive reviews, but at the same time many claimed that it started the chicken wars,” said Bruno Cardinali, Popeyes’ chief marketing officer.

“Now, it’s time to say goodbye to the chicken wars and celebrate our new Nuggets, because we come in piece, 8 piece to be exact,” he added.

Orders for the new Popeyes nuggets start at four pieces and go up to 36 pieces if placed in a Popeyes location. The 48-piece set is available for purchase through the Popeyes app or online ordering.
