Samsung Display is looking to supply the OLED panels used on Valve’s handheld gaming computer Steam Deck, as reported by The Elec. The latest model of Steam Deck uses a 7.4-inch OLED panel supplied by the South Korean company.

The initial version launched in February used a 7-inch liquid crystal display, an a-Si panel that was supplied by BOE. The Chinese display panel maker is also expected to supply OLED panels for Steam Deck but Samsung Display’s patent lawsuits filed against it in the US may cancel this.
Analyst firm Omdia expected 3 million units of Steam Deck to be shipped by the end of the year. The screen sizes of handheld gaming computers, which have been around 5 inches in the past, are increasing the 7 inches and up. This may become a new revenue stream for display panel makers.
Meanwhile, Steam Deck OLED has a screen refresh rate of 90Hz, up from 60Hz of prior models, and a resolution of 1280×800. It is also 30 grams lighter, supports the latest Wi-Fi standard and is powered by AMD’s 6nm accelerated processing unit.
