Suspected human smuggling operation left 4 dead after boat capsizes off San Diego coast

Four people died, and more than two dozen others were brought to the hospital after a wooden boat capsized just off the San Diego coast near Point Loma on Sunday on what appeared to be a human smuggling operation.

Monica Munoz, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson, said that they received a report that a vessel had overturned near the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma around 10:27 A.M. The lifeguard chief for San Diego, James Gartland, told reporters that it is likely that the boat had hit the reef, was destroyed, and 30 people came scrambling out.

“This was a mass rescue operation that turned into a mass casualty incident,” said Gartland.

When the first responders arrived, the 40-foot cabin cruiser boat was broken apart, according to Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. They have counted a total of 30 people from the boat, including the four who had died. Most of them swam to shore on their own, but six people were rescued from the water after being pulled out by rip current out to sea.

“Our goal was just to rescue everyone we could. Conditions were pretty rough — 5-6 feet of surf, windy, cold, the water’s around 60 degrees, so you get hypothermic pretty quickly,” Romero said. Adding that, a Navy staff member on the beach with his family also swam out and helped save people in the water.

“Every indication, from our perspective, is that this was a smuggling vessel used to smuggle migrants into the United States illegally,” said Jeff Stephenson, who is a supervisor and border patrol agent for US Customs and Border Patrol. The person believed to be the smuggler is already in custody. Stephenson told reporters that compared to the previous year, the maritime apprehensions of smugglers increased by 92% in the fiscal year ending last September.

The fire department confirmed that more than 20 people were immediately transported to nearby hospitals, including Palomar Medical Center West, Kaiser Clairemont Mesa, Sharp Memorial, UCSD Medical Center (Hillcrest), Grossmont Kaiser Zion, and Paradise Valley Hospital.

Kendall Jenner Pranks Family With Engagement and Fake Pregnancy

In a boozy game of truth-or-dare on YouTube, Kourtney dares her sister, Kendall, to tell the family she is pregnant and engaged. During a fun cocktail hour for Kourtney Kardashian’s brand Poosh’s annual wellness conference, Kourtney suggested that they play truth or dare over some 818 Tequila drinks. Kourtney dared the 25-year-old to prank the family by pretending that she’s set to marry NBA star, Devin Booker.

Kendall Jenner agreed to do the prank by messaging the group chat of the Kardashian-Jenner family that she had gotten involved with boyfriend Devin Booker on Saturday, May 1.

“Oh my God, but it’s believable, so I will do it,” the supermodel told her sibling.

“This is amazing. You know Khloé is gonna write a novel.” Kourtney replied.

The reality stars asked a crew member to lend them a diamond ring to make the prank more credible. But Kenny’s sisters noticed pretty quickly that something wasn’t right.

“You’re lying,” Kylie Jenner said when she called Kendall directly after receiving the text message. She also told Kendall that the ring obviously didn’t fit her finger.

“That’s so stupid; why would you do that to us?” said Khloé over the phone. She asked when the two admitted that it was just a prank.

“Well, at least we know you guys will be excited when the day comes,” Kourtney replied.

Before the engagement prank, Kendall was also dared to call mom Kris Jenner and tell her she was pregnant.

“That’s so weird; you just told me this because I dreamed about this last night. I think it’s great news, but I’m your mom.” their mother said. After Kenny announced that it was a prank, Kris said, “Oh brother, I’ll go put the champagne back on ice.”

Kendall and NBA player Devin Booker were rumored to be dating in April 2020 and made their relationship official in February 2021. The two have been getting serious as a couple since then.

LeBron James exits the game vs Raptors with an ankle injury, uncertain that he’ll ever be 100% healthy again

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar, LeBron James, missed 20 games over six weeks. The 36-year-old has been durable for most of his career, but he already missed a lot of time off-court this season with an ankle injury. His anticipated return to the court on Friday night ended in a 110-106 disappointing loss to the Sacramento Kings. In the next game on Sunday, James left the court against the Toronto Raptors midway through the fourth quarter and didn’t return to play due to another ankle issue.

He missed the end of Sunday’s Los Angeles Lakers’ loss to the Toronto Raptors with right ankle soreness. He had contributed 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists on 6-for-11 shooting in 28 minutes before exiting the game. James came out with just under seven minutes left in the game, and the Lakers were behind by 16. Even after the team cut the deficit to six points with just under a minute to play, he was not allowed to return.

“The first half it feels really good, warming up for the game it feels really good, but at halftime, it gets sore on me. It feels tight. I don’t have too much level of concern, but I need to be healthy,” LeBron said of his right ankle.

“His ankle developed some soreness; we decided not to bring him back. We’ll see how he’s feeling tomorrow.” Lakers coach Frank Vogel described the injury.

The ankle issue had visibly bothered LeBron well before he left the game. He was not as quick as he usually is. He was not attacking the rim or glass, not chasing after loose balls, and not defending with his usual tenacity. The Lakers lost six of their last seven games and will face a tough stretch of games this week taking on the Nuggets, Clippers, Trail Blazers, Suns, and Knicks.

The Lakers will face the Denver Nuggets on Monday night in the second game of a back-to-back, leaving James’ status in the air for that matchup. Before starting the 2021 season, James signed a two-year extension with the Lakers that will last until the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

Chicago area restaurants flourish with warm weather and relaxed COVID-19 restrictions

The summerlike weather and more relaxed COVID-19 metrics are helping businesses in the Chicago area, particularly restaurants, pick up this weekend. Chicagoans were out in big numbers that gave a boost that many restaurants desperately need. The warm weather on Sunday drew large crowds to relish the outdoors and enjoy the sunny day. Complementing the weather, the loosened restrictions also encouraged more and more people to be comfortable and enjoy indoor dining.

The restaurant owners hope that the vibrant and lively atmosphere amounts to a glimpse of what’s to come, CBS 2’s Marie Saavedra reported. The warm weather and relaxed restrictions have restaurant owners feeling like they’re taking one more step towards recovery, though admittedly, quite a long way to go. On Sunday, Saavedra visited Hey Nonny Live Music and Local Kitchen in Arlington Heights, and one of the signs of pandemic improvement is live music.

“It has been nonstop creative adjustments. To be open and to be able to do all this means that we can do what we do and bring live music to everybody,” said Chip Brooks, who owns Hey Nonny along with Chris Dungan.

“It’s so fantastic to have people indoors. I think everybody has said that they’ve seen just a great turnout this spring, and people have really seen an uptick in business. It’s just one of those things that we think that our business is just going to pick up every single month moving forward,” Dungan said.

The crowd for jazz brunch was huddled both outside and inside the restaurant, thanks to the relaxed mitigations in suburban Cook County. Since Friday, indoor dining is allowed at 50 percent capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.

The City of Chicago is also at 50 percent indoor capacity – and that has helped. But when it comes to the city, a real rebound is not possible without regaining tourism,” said Pat Doerr of the Hospitality Business Association of Chicago.

According to the Department of Public Health of Cook County, the relaxing of restrictions came after more than 50 percent of residents 16 and up have at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine and that there were fewer hospitalizations and deaths.
