Moderna to Start with Human Trials for Two Experimental Vaccines for HIV
According to a study record filed to the United States National Institutes of Health Clinical Trials registry, Moderna could begin human clinical trials for two new mRNA-based HIV vaccines as early as September 19.
Science Alert’s Fiona Macdonald said that the vaccines would use a technique similar to the ground-breaking mRNA method used in their COVID-19 vaccine. The human trial is scheduled to last through May 2023.
The first mRNA vaccines used in people were the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. mRNA vaccines function by instructing cells to produce fragments of the identical proteins found on a virus’s outer shell. The proteins subsequently stimulate immune cells to recognize and destroy the virus, according to Popular Science’s Sarah Chodosh.
The trials will assess the two experimental vaccines’ safety and their ability to generate a diverse array of bNABs against HIV. According to the Independent, the vaccine will be administered to 56 healthy people aged 18 to 56 who do not have HIV. The experimental trials will involve four groups, with two receiving a combination of vaccines and the other two receiving only one of the two vaccines. Each group will be informed of the vaccine kind they are receiving.
Developing an HIV vaccine is difficult because the retrovirus integrates into the human genome 72 hours after transmission. A significant amount of neutralizing antibodies (bNABs) must be present during transmission to prevent infection. Both of Moderna’s HIV vaccinations will contribute to resolving this issue by triggering the release of bNABs in the body.
During the first round of the trials, researchers are primarily interested in determining whether the vaccine is safe and induces an immunological response. The second and third phases will evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine in preventing HIV infections.
“Moderna are testing a complicated concept which starts the immune response against HIV,” says Robin Shattock, an immunologist at Imperial College London, to the Independent. “It gets you to first base, but it’s not a home run. Essentially, we recognize that you need a series of vaccines to induce a response that gives you the breadth needed to neutralize HIV. The mRNA technology may be key to solving the HIV vaccine issue, but it’s going to be a multi-year process.”
Tom Cruise’ BMW X7 was Stolen Along with Thousands of Pounds Worth of Personal Belongings While Filming Mission: Impossible 7
Tom Cruise was enraged when he learned he was a victim of a high-tech heist while filming sequences for Mission: Impossible 7 in Birmingham. After his luxury car, a BMW X7, was parked outside a Birmingham hotel, thieves used a scanner to clone the signal from the keyless ignition fob.
And the ploy, deserving of the gadget-obsessed MI film series, enabled the gang to drive away with the automobile right in front of Tom’s elite security crew.
“Tom had been driven around in the car while in Birmingham, and some of his luggage and belongings were inside it when it was taken. It’s since been recovered by police because it was equipped with an electronic tracking device, but everything inside it had gone,” shared a source to The Sun.
“It’s a huge embarrassment for the security team, and the guy who had been driving it was hopping mad — but not as mad as Tom!” The source added.
The thieves stole the black vehicle in minutes after intercepting the fob signal placed outside the Grand Hotel, which is within a two-minute walk from West Midlands Police headquarters.
Modern vehicles equipped with keyless entry and ignition fobs have grown increasingly vulnerable to “relay thieves” who operate via wireless transmitters. The thieves intercept signals by tricking the target vehicle into sending a message to the keyless fob.
The signal is then captured by an accomplice standing close to the vehicle, deceiving the automobile into believing the key is within range, allowing it to be unlocked. Once the accomplice is inside the car, the procedure can be repeated to start the engine and a blank fob programmed via the vehicle’s computer port.
BMW is believed to have sent Tom with an identical replacement vehicle within hours of the theft. Paramount Pictures, the producer of the new MI blockbuster, declined to give any comment.
“We received a report of a BMW X7 stolen from Church Street, Birmingham, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The car was recovered a short time later in Smethwick. CCTV inquiries have been made in the area that the car was recovered from. Inquiries are ongoing,” said the police spokesperson.
Kylie Jenner Is Angry with Travis Scott for Refusing to Move in Full-Time with Her
Kylie Jenner is at odds with her baby daddy Travis Scott because he has refused to move in with her full-time, The Sun had learned. Kylie, 24, pregnant with their second child, seeks the rapper’s “complete commitment.”
She is eager for Travis to relocate to her $36 million Holmby Hills estate.
“It’s causing drama is that Kylie wants Travis to move into her house – she’s ready for the next stage – becoming a proper family,” according to a piece of exclusive information from a source.
“As much as Travis was also planning the future, he was the one who was holding out ‘until the timing was right’ – because he’s so far insisted he needs to keep his own place in LA,” the source added. “He also spends 50 percent of his time back in Houston.”
“That’s caused a lot of trust issues between them. Kylie is really pushing for 100 percent commitment – but while he insists he’s 100 percent committed, he also wants his own space.” The insider added.
Kylie and Travis, 30, recently restarted their romance, and it was revealed that they had been trying for months to conceive another child. Kylie has no intention of concealing her second pregnancy, as she did with Stormi, their three-year-old daughter.
“It’s not the same experience for her. She was a lot younger with Stormi, and it was her first pregnancy, so she took the privacy as seriously as possible,” an insider said.
“She will still be very safe and private, well as much privacy as she can get, with this second pregnancy, but she doesn’t plan to be in hiding the entire time like last time.”
When Kylie Jenner became pregnant with her first child in 2018, she kept the news private by living at her Calabasas mansion for months. Kylie first fueled pregnancy speculations in late June when she appeared to skip the KUWTK reunion’s tequila shot.
Days later, fans observed she was eating sushi entirely composed of avocado and appeared to be “backlogging” previous images of her body to make them appear new.
Kanye West Is Criticized for Appearing with Marilyn Manson and DaBaby on an Apple Music Stream
Kanye West amazed the crowd at his Chicago performance on Thursday night but faced backlash for performing with Marilyn Manson and DaBaby for Apple’s music streaming service. He was chastised for his choice of guest stars at his listening party.
On Thursday night, Kanye hosted his third promotional show for his upcoming album Donda at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium. He appeared outside a replica of his childhood home during the special event, which was live-streamed on Apple Music. The unreleased album was played for the 40,000 people in attendance.
However, many fans were upset and angry when Kanye brought out Marilyn Manson and DaBaby as guests on one song.
Marilyn Manson has been involved in sexual, physical, and mental abuse allegations made by several women in the last year, including his ex-fiancée Evan Rachel Wood.
In response to these allegations, he stated on Instagram: “Obviously, my art and my life have long been magnets for controversy, but these recent claims about me are horrible distortions of reality.”
“My intimate relationships have always been entirely consensual with like-minded partners. Regardless of how – and why – others are now choosing to misrepresent the past, that is the truth.”
Manson is now facing four sexual abuse charges as of June 2021. He has continued to deny the charges leveled against him.
Alongside Manson was another masked figure, later confirmed to be rapper DaBaby, accused of homophobia and fueling HIV stigma following comments he made last month at a music festival.
Additionally, DaBaby used a verse to a song that replaced Jay-Z on the track being played.
Following his stunt with Manson and DaBaby, Kanye startled the crowd by appearing to set himself on fire. His estranged wife, Kim Kardashian West, was later joined on stage, dressed in a bridal gown.
Kanye made waves earlier this week when he filed court paperwork to change his name to “Ye.” Previously, the musician expressed his affection for the two-letter moniker, stating it is the most often used word in the Bible.
Five-Year-Old Virginia Boy is One of the Youngest Hiker to Complete the Appalachian Trail
Harvey Sutton is now one of the youngest people to complete the Appalachian Trail, according to NPR. He and his parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, just completed the 2,100-mile trek across 14 states in 209 days.
“It started out as a joke, and we decided maybe that could be our mini-retirement and hike the Appalachian Trail with Harvey,” Josh told NPR about getting his son prepared for the epic journey. “We started training [him] at a young age to hike and camp, and he took on to it really well.”
According to NPR, Harvey was two years old when his parents began increasing his stamina by taking him on short walks. The youngster was four years old when the Suttons began their adventure in January in Georgia and completed it last week in Maine.
“We learned that he is fabulous at hiking, but as long as we’re playing make-believe and pretend with him all day long, then he moves quickly and hikes a lot faster than a lot of us imagine,” Josh told NPR.
“It gave us a bond and a strength that we hadn’t realized before,” mom Cassie Sutton shared to the Associated Press. “We’re closer than ever before.”
While the hike was strenuous, Harvey’s parents reported that their son found it quite exciting. When he wasn’t on the prowl for frogs and lizards, he fueled himself with Skittles and peanut butter tortillas, according to the AP.
Cassie shared with NPR, “I think a lot of people are surprised at how well he did. “They’re like, ‘How did you get your 5-year-old to do that because my 5-year-old won’t even walk half a mile without complaining?’ Everyone is pretty amazed and astounded.”
But Harvey chimed in, “I would do it again because I like it so much.”
“The rock scrambles were really fun and hard. We were not bored,” the boy told the Associated Press of his journey.
With most schools nationally returning to in-person courses following a year of virtual learning due to the epidemic, the Suttons are interested in their son’s adjustment from the outdoors to a small classroom when he attends kindergarten school.
“Hopefully, after going hiking for 10 hours a day to sitting in the classroom, he’ll do okay,” Josh told NPR.
