Gin Made from Peas Removes More Carbon Dioxide from the Air Than It Emits

Garden peas are frequently overlooked on our dinner dishes. However, one farm-based distillery is reinventing the humble bean as the star component in its environmentally friendly gin. The Arbroath-based Arbikie Highland Estate has developed a range of spirits called Nàdar (“nature” in Gaelic), which eliminates more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits, making it “climate-positive,” according to Kirsty Black, master distiller at Arbikie.

Spirits are typically produced by fermenting cereal grains such as wheat or barley, which require synthetic fertilizers. Arbikie reduces carbon emissions and pollution caused by synthetic fertilizers by utilizing peas as the base spirit. Following distillation, leftover pea by-products are used to create zero-waste high-protein animal feed.

Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in responsibly produced spirits, and Black believes that Nàdar will educate other producers about the possibilities.

According to Felicity Crotty, a senior lecturer at London’s Rural Agricultural University, synthetic fertilizer manufacture is energy-intensive. According to a 2017 study, 43% of the carbon footprint of a loaf of bread comes from the ammonium nitrate used to produce the wheat.

While most plants cannot obtain nitrogen without fertilizers, legumes such as peas and lentils have a “symbiotic relationship with bacteria” that enables them to extract nitrogen from the air and feed the plant, Crotty tells CNN Business.

Utilizing organic food to grow grains for distillation would also eliminate emissions caused by synthetic fertilizers. On the other hand, organic farms currently account for only 1.5 percent of agricultural land use, accounting for a minuscule portion of food production.

Not only do legumes require no fertilizer, but they may also be planted alongside other crops, enriching the soil with nitrogen and lowering the need to fertilize those crops as well.

That is precisely what Arbikie is accomplishing. One disadvantage of utilizing peas instead of wheat is that the crop requires 112 percent more space than wheat does. However, Arbikie is more than a distillery; it is also a thriving farm, where peas were already being planted alongside other plants to help the land retain nitrogen. It has created a high-value application for peas that would otherwise go to waste by manufacturing gin.

Additionally, the residual pea waste is converted to animal feed, thereby avoiding carbon emissions related to feed production, such as land clearing, cultivation, and transportation.

Each of these sustainable actions contributes to the total. The gin was analyzed, and it was revealed that each bottle of Nàdar gin produced removes 1.54 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent from the environment.

In partnership with luxury resort firms like Aman Resorts, Four Seasons, and Rosewood Hotels, the Nàdar collection — which now includes a climate-positive vodka — is rapidly expanding globally.

At £43.00 ($60) for a 70cl bottle, Nàdar is aimed squarely at the luxury drinks market, with a price point equivalent to premium brands such as Tanqueray and Monkey 47.

“We developed a valuable, high-end product with [peas],” says Black. “In turn, that will increase the value of the crop, encourage more farmers to grow them, and ultimately, affect the environmental footprint of the supply chain.”

“Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan Denies Allegation That Queen Latifah’s Dog was Mauled by His Pit Bull

Cesar Millan, the “Dog Whisperer,” angrily rejected allegations that his dog murdered Queen Latifah’s puppy. According to a newly disclosed lawsuit, the same pit bull allegedly mauled a previous “star gymnast,” rendering her unable to compete.

Lidia Matiss, a gymnast who just filed a lawsuit alleging that the dog attacked her in 2017, also alleged that Junior attacked other dogs, including one brought to Millan’s Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita, California by Queen Latifah. She claimed Millan attempted to conceal the attack by having an employee inform Latifah that her dog had been struck and killed by a car.

The publicist for the “Dog Whisperer” star told Page Six on Wednesday that the allegation that his pit bull Junior, who died last year at the age of 15, attacked the rapper’s pup to death was “a blatant lie.”

Queen Latifah’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Page Six.

In response to Matiss’ claims that the pup attacked her at Millan’s training facility, where her mother was employed at the time, Millan’s representative stated, “This incident occurred over four years ago.”

“Two weeks ago, Ms. Mattiss’ counsel sent a letter demanding that Mr. Millan pay her $850,000 – or she would be going ‘to the press.’ Mr. Millan refused to respond to this threat, and this interview is the result.”

The statement said, “As everyone knows, Cesar Millan is one of the world’s most prominent dog training experts. Over his extraordinary career, Mr. Millan has fostered and helped – literally – thousands of behaviorally troubled animals dogs – often with dogs at risk of being ‘put down.'”

Matiss, he noted, was “well aware” of the danger and “repeatedly returned to his property and ranch after the incident.” According to court documents, the claim was filed in January, and Millan and Matiss have both pushed to have the case tried.

Millan was acquitted of animal cruelty charges in 2016 when a dog attacked a pig on video during one of his taped training sessions.

Meet Britney Spears’ New Financial Manager, John Zabel

Jamie Spears is out after 13 years at the helm of his daughter Britney Spears’ contentious conservatorship. A judge ruled Wednesday that he be immediately suspended from his duty as conservator. The ruling comes after Spears’ lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, made three different requests to remove Jamie as the pop star’s conservator since July.

As one man leaves, another step in to take his place. However, the pop singer has some influence on who is in command this time.

On Wednesday, Judge Brenda Penny designated John Zabel, a California-based expert, as the estate’s temporary conservator. Rosengart first proposed that Los Angeles-based accountant Jason Rubin as Jamie’s replacement in July but dropped Rubin’s nomination last week in favor of Zabel.

Britney Spears’ father has objected to Mathew Rosengart’s attempt to designate John Zabel as the singer’s temporary conservator. Jamie Spears’ legal team also argued that Zabel is not a ‘qualified fiduciary’ and lacks the necessary expertise and competence to assume immediate and temporary control of a ‘USD 60 million conservatorship estate. Additionally, they stated that Britney’s team had not provided sufficient information regarding the possibility of ‘Mr. Zabel being bonded.’

Khloé Kardashian’s Good American Ad Rejected by Television Networks For Being Too Racy

Khloé Kardashian’s first Good American television commercial will not air. Less than 24 hours after Good American launched its “Find the One” social media campaign, the brand confirms that television networks rejected the advertisement for being “too racy” and criticizing Kardashian for not being “properly clothed.”

Khloé, 36, relaxes topless in bed wearing Good American Good Legs jeans and covers her chest with white blankets in the 30-second clip, which is still visible on Good American’s Instagram.

She explains: “It’s just different this time. I feel good. I feel sexy. Like I don’t have to keep looking. I think I found the one.”

According to a statement provided to PEOPLE, the denim brand states: “Good American’s ‘Find The One’ campaign, which launched yesterday September 28, was ultimately rejected by TV networks due to the video being too racy, sharing that ‘all parties should be properly clothed.’ If wearing a great pair of denim is wrong, then Good American doesn’t want to be right.”

The company continued by stating that the advertisement was created to empower and inspire women’s confidence. “As a brand built on empowering women to celebrate their bodies with confidence by offering high-quality denim and apparel in all sizes, Good American’s ‘Find the One’ campaign is meant to uplift and celebrate that feeling of sexiness and confidence that all women experience when finding the perfect pair of jeans,” a representative for Good American says.

However, Khloé and Good American are not deterred by the rejection. The brand said they want to “edit the ad for approval to eventually air.” Khloé has yet to make an announcement on the matter.

In 2016, Khloé and co-founder Emma Grede founded Good American. The denim collection grossed $1 million on its first day of sales, making it the largest denim launch in apparel history.

“What’s really encouraging is the customer response,” Khloé remarked. “When people try the jeans, they fall in love. The reviews speak for themselves, and that’s something I am really proud of. We’ve created a product that works on a girl who’s size 00 and looks equally great in a size 24.”
