Elon Musk: xAI to build a good AGI

Elon Musk has officially announced a new artificial intelligence company xAI. It is basically a rival to ChatGPT. The company has released a new domain online with a complete website introduction. The new company will be led by Musk, according to the website “will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”

“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the website states, echoing language Musk has used before to describe his AI ambitions. “The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk tweeted in December, responding to a Twitter user who asked OpenAI’s CEO if it was possible to “turn off the woke settings” on ChatGPT.

Back in April this year, in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Musk said teased plans for his new AI venture. “We’re going to start something which I call TruthGPT,” he said, describing it as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that “cares about understanding the universe.”

He said xAI would seek to build a “good AGI,” as an alternative to Microsoft, Google and OpenAI. AGI stands for artificial general intelligence and refers to AI that can solve problems like a human.

Elon Musk recently made an announcement about his new company, which comes several months after he expressed concerns about the potentially destructive impact of artificial intelligence and joined other tech leaders in calling for a pause in the uncontrolled AI race.

Although limited information is available regarding the company’s mission, the website indicates an active recruitment process. Currently, all the individuals showcased on the website as part of the team are male.

Musk’s latest venture announcement coincides with a critical period for him. Following his $44 billion deal of Twitter in October, the platform’s future has become uncertain due to the launch of Meta’s Threads app, which quickly amassed over 100 million sign-ups within a week. Furthermore, reports have surfaced regarding a decline in Twitter’s usage.

In addition to Twitter, Musk runs several other companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company.
