Fired Memphis Officer Texts Photos of Tyre Nichols After Beating, According to New Documents

Demetirus Haley, one of the officers involved in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols, 29, took photos of his body immediately after the assault and sent them to multiple other people, according to documents that were just released.

In the document, sent to the Peace Officer Standards and Training by the Memphis Police Department in its request to have former officers Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills decertified, it was stated that “on (Haley’s) personal cell phone, (Haley) took two photographs while standing in front of the obviously injured subject after he was handcuffed.” Haley then “admitted (he) shared the photo in a text message with five people; one civilian employee, two MPD officers, and one female acquaintance.”

The document also says a sixth person was later found to have received the same photograph.

Demetrius Haley is one of six officers fired from Memphis PD in the wake of Nichols losing his life. He is one of five who were indicted on multiple criminal charges, including second-degree murder and aggravated assault, in Nichols’ death.

The Memphis Police Department and Haley’s attorney declined to comment.
