Huawei is currently dealing with sanctions from the US government for over four years. In May 2019, the US Department of Commerce included Huawei on the entity list. These sanctions effectively banned US companies from selling hardware and software to Huawei and restricted their access to 5G chipsets.
Now, a piece of effective news is circulating online for all Huawei users globally. Recent reports suggest that Huawei may return back with 5G chipsets developed in partnership with China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC).
Huawei 5G
The Chinese smartphone market indicates that Huawei and SMIC are working together on the development of 5G chipsets. These chipsets are being manufactured using SMIC’s N+1 manufacturing process and Huawei’s electronic design automation (EDA) software tools.
The projected yield rates for Huawei’s upcoming 5G chipsets are below 50%. However, reports suggest an initial production of 2 to 4 million units, with the potential to reach 10 million units in the future. The Huawei phone with the newly developed 5G chipset is expected to be launched later this year.
Huawei Shipment Record
To recall, the Chinese tech giant shipped 240.6 million smartphones worldwide in 2019, its peak year, according to Canalys, before selling its Honor unit accounted for nearly a fifth of shipments that year.
Huawei’s 5G smartphone may debut with the flagship P60, with new launches likely in early 2024, the three research firms said, adding they were basing such predictions on information they had received via checks with contacts in Huawei’s supply chain and recent company announcements.
