Regardless of the outcome of Kevin Costner’s role in the series, Matthew McConaughey is set to star in his own star-studded spin-off of Yellowstone.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding the future of Paramount, Showtime, and MTV Entertainment, President Chris McCarthy was reluctant to reveal details about the future of one of his major franchises.

However, McCarthy did confirm that the McConaughey Yellowstone spin-off is still in the works. Although previous reports suggest that the spin-off will feature some of the show’s prominent cast members, the official cast has yet to be announced.

In February, Deadline reported that the actor was in talks for a new project amidst rumors that Yellowstone Season 5 could be the last due to scheduling conflicts with Costner.

The report suggested that Costner was only interested in filming the first half of the season for 50 days instead of the 65 he had initially committed to. Additionally, sources claimed he only wanted to film the second set of episodes for one week.

In response to the reports, a spokesperson for Paramount Network stated that they had no updates to provide but highlighted that Kevin Costner is an integral part of the Yellowstone series, and they hope to keep him involved for a long time. They also mentioned that they are continually exploring ways to expand the franchise, and partnering with a talented actor like Matthew McConaughey would be an excellent opportunity.

According to the report, Paramount Network declined Costner’s recent proposal and focused on another show instead. While addressing the issue of Costner’s scheduling conflicts, President Chris McCarthy emphasized the actor’s significant contribution to Yellowstone and expressed his desire to keep him involved for an extended period.

However, despite the uncertainty surrounding Costner’s return, McCarthy confirmed that McConaughey’s spin-off series is still on track, regardless of whether or not Costner is involved.

While the situation remains unresolved, Keith Cox, MTV Entertainment Studios’ President of Scripted, recently revealed that an announcement about the resumption of production is forthcoming. Cox also expressed his confidence that Costner will continue participating in the series.

With the success of its two prequel series, 1883 and 1923, the Yellowstone franchise has gained significant popularity beyond the main show, giving the network more flexibility regarding the franchise’s future.
