Nissan is recalling approx 10K Ariya EVs for their ongoing software defect

Nissan started recalling a few models of 2024 Ariya electric SUVs because of defective inverter software. This causes the vehicle to shut down suddenly without any warning or indication. While this recall was reported on September 8, that impacted 9,813 Ariya vehicles. According to Nissan’s production records, the issue arises on a few MY23 Ariya EVs built between June 17, 2022, and May 19, 2023.

As Nissan’s revert on affected vehicles. The potential reason is the conductive shavings from the drive motor slip ring can produce a short circuit between two slip rings. While, due to the short circuit, the inverter determines the overcurrent and lower/cuts the motor torque due to fail-safe protocols. Therefore, by happening this, the vehicle can shut down unexpectedly with an “EV System Off” message on the dashboard.

At the same time, the torque will be cut off to the wheels, as long as the fail-safe mode is disabled. Also, it needs to be turned off and back on again. In addition to this info, the automaker first noticed the issue in January 2022 at the time of the production trial. The EV electric motor shuts down after the vehicle begins moving at a slower speed.

After undergoing the proper diagnostics, the DTC disclosed a short circuit had happened. Although no damage has been reported. Moving ahead, between the tenure of February 2022 and April 2022, the automaker inspected the Ariya component and got the issue.

Nissan has a proper look at the shavings in the slip ring assembly. However, in late December 2022, the company got another report from an Ariya EV in China with respect to shutdown.

Over the next few months, Nissan found that the fibers could be generated during usage. Since it was momentary and did not damage any components, Nissan “did not judge this condition as abnormal.

Additionally, Nissan implies the improved inverter fail-safe control logic into production in April 2023. This occurred after receiving three more reports through September 2023. Meanwhile, as an action of caution. Nissan is voluntarily recalling the Ariya electric SUVs in order to update the inverter/motor controller software.
