Apple Clarifies: Notes App Defaults to ‘Discoverable by Others’ for Enhanced Suggestions, Not Privacy Invasion

Apple responded to concerns regarding its Notes app after reports surfaced that Apple enables the “Discoverable by Others” option by default. Users feared that this setting might share their personal information with nearby individuals. However, Apple clarified that this is not the case.

The issue arose with the release of the iOS 17.2 update last December, which introduced a new “Journal” application aimed at helping users reflect on their daily lives. Despite the app’s intended purpose, attention quickly turned to the default setting of “Discoverable by Others.”

Many users are worried that Apple’s default setting meant their personal data could be shared without consent. Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal sought clarification from Apple regarding this matter. According to IT House’s translation of Apple’s response, the company explained that the iPhone uses Bluetooth to detect nearby devices but does not store specific contact information. Instead, Apple used this data to enhance and prioritize journal suggestions.

Apple provided an example scenario where people recognize hosting a dinner party as an unusual event based on the number of contacts present. The spokesperson emphasized that the “Discoverable” feature aims to showcase the benefits of the Notes app to users, regardless of whether their contacts use it.

Crucially, Apple reassured users that enabling this option does not automatically share their name and location with others nearby. Instead, it utilizes device presence to tailor suggestions for the Notes app.

For users who prefer to opt out of this feature, Apple outlined a simple process. By navigating to the Settings app, selecting “Privacy and Security,” and then choosing “Note Suggestions,” users can easily disable the “Discoverable by Others” option.

Apple’s response aims to alleviate concerns by clarifying that while the “Discoverable by Others” option is enabled by default, it does not compromise user privacy by sharing personal information with others nearby.
