Toyota speed up local EV development in China

Japanese automakers lagging in order to grow in grown in Chinese EV market. While, on the other hand, Toyota seems to turn things around. As the company revealed recently that it will raise local development of tech and software in China. This is intended to make “electrified vehicles that are competitive,” since EVs acquiring the market at a fast pace.

Toyota working with top suppliers in China

The Chinese EV market had good hold by foreign automakers including Toyota and Volkswagen. But gradually it seeing extraordinary growth by domestically built EVs. The cherry on the top is price deduction by the nation’s top EV makers. It comprises the players like BYD and Tesla. Thereby, it creates pressure on other automakers as well.

Also, Toyota’s new plans call for speeding up local design and development of smart cockpits in order to enhance the driving experience. This is in regard to modern interior design and built-in AI, this is the factor for which buyers these days in China are looking.

At the same time, Toyota also working with its top suppliers, namely Denso and Aisin. This is with the motive to speed up the electric powertrain development. The move comes after a report came into highlight from Reuters which claimed Toyota’s joint venture in the region with China’s GAC was laying off workers recently.

Additionally, Toyota also plans to substantially minimize costs through three initiatives. It comprises developing a local supplier base, reviewing parts designs, and reforming production and making, in order to achieve competitiveness.

CEO of Toyota China, Tatsuro Ueda, has a statement with respect to the situation, saying:

The Chinese market is growing at an unprecedented pace. Toyota will also work together as a group to reform how we work & think to survive in China. By promoting local development with IEM by TOYOTA at its core, we will attempt to develop and provide competitive products that can satisfy Chinese customers at a fast pace.

In the interim, the automaker keeps on implementing its “multi-pathway” approach. The same comprises EVs, PHEVs, HEV, and FCEVs.

Electric vehicle urgency reaches Japan

Freshly elected CEO Koji Sato said during an interview after taking handover in April. “We need to increase our speed and efforts to firmly meet the customer expectations in the Chinese market.”

Toyota already drop prices on its first electric SUV in the region, which is the bZ4X, earlier this year. On the other hand, the automaker also issued a massive recall which is approx 12K units for suits first electric sedan, the BYD-powered bZ3, over defective door handles.

The automaker has disclosed plans to advance new EV technologies. This includes the Giga casting, to reduce making complexity, self-propelled production lines, hypersonic rocket tech to enhance efficiency, and next-gen batteries that will enhance range while cutting costs.
