Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have officially settled their divorce, marking the end of an eight-year legal battle. On Monday, they signed a written agreement resolving marital and property rights, as confirmed in a Los Angeles Superior Court filing. People magazine first reported the settlement, which eliminates future spousal financial support. However, other legal disputes between the two remain unresolved, including an ongoing lawsuit over their shared French winery, Chateau Miraval.
“Angelina filed for divorce more than eight years ago,” said Jolie’s attorney, James Simon. “She left their shared properties and has since focused on peace and healing for her family. This settlement is a significant step forward.” Despite the relief of finalizing this chapter, Jolie is reportedly exhausted by the prolonged process. A judge must still approve the agreement.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were together for 12 years and married for two. Their six children have been central to the proceedings. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 following a private jet flight during which she accused Pitt of physical abuse toward her and their children. Though the FBI and child services investigated, no charges were filed. A 2022 FBI report revealed probable cause for prosecution, but Jolie chose not to pursue charges to protect her family.
In 2019, a judge declared the couple legally single while leaving custody and asset division unresolved. Initially, a private judge awarded equal custody of their children, but Jolie successfully sought the judge’s removal over a conflict of interest, forcing the process to restart. Over time, four of their children reached adulthood, leaving only 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne as minors requiring custody arrangements. Recently, one daughter, formerly Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, removed Pitt’s surname from hers.
Throughout the divorce, Jolie and Pitt largely avoided public commentary, maintaining privacy by using a private judge. However, the ongoing winery dispute has revealed some tensions. Jolie sold her share of Chateau Miraval to the Tenute del Mondo wine group, which Pitt called “vindictive” and “unlawful.” He alleged the sale violated their agreement and ruined what he considered a personal sanctuary. Jolie’s legal team countered, claiming Pitt demanded a non-disclosure agreement to suppress allegations of abuse.
The divorce agreement does not impact the winery lawsuit, which remains unresolved. Despite the contentious split, both stars have continued their successful careers. Pitt, known for “Fight Club” and “Inglourious Basterds,” earned critical acclaim and an Oscar for his role in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.” He also acknowledged a drinking problem at the time of the split but stated he has since become sober and sought therapy. Jolie, famous for “Maleficent” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” focused on directing and acting while raising her children. Her recent portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas in “Maria” has brought her back into the Oscar spotlight.
The couple’s relationship began in 2004 on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” where they co-starred as married assassins. As one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples, they dominated headlines for over a decade. Their eventual split was one of the most publicized in entertainment history, intertwining family, finances, and allegations of misconduct.
The resolution of their divorce closes a significant chapter in their lives, but lingering legal battles indicate their story is far from over. For now, Jolie and Pitt continue to focus on their respective careers and personal lives, with a shared priority of protecting their children.
