Despicable Me 4: Meet the Voices Behind Gru, and More

The cast of Despicable Me 4 features a blend of returning favorites and new talent, each bringing their unique flair to this beloved animated franchise.

Set to hit theaters on July 3, this installment promises more minion madness, with Gru (Steve Carell) and his family facing a new nemesis from Gru’s past. Let’s take a closer look at the stars bringing these characters to life.

Steve Carell reprises his role as Gru, a reformed supervillain now focused on being a good dad.

Carell, who hails from Concord, Massachusetts, first gained recognition on The Daily Show. Subsequently, he became a household name as Michael Scott on NBC’s The Office. His impressive filmography features hits such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and The Big Short. Additionally, Carell married Nancy Carell in 1995, and together, they share two children.

Will Ferrell joins the franchise as Maxime Le Mal, a villain with a vendetta against Gru.

Ferrell, originally from California, initially rose to prominence on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Subsequently, he became known for iconic comedies such as Elf and Anchorman. Despite having never seen the previous Despicable Me films, Ferrell brings his comedic talent to this new role. Off-screen, he is married to Viveca Paulin, and together they have three children.

Miranda Cosgrove returns as Margo, Gru’s eldest adopted daughter. Cosgrove, who started her acting career in School of Rock, became a teen icon on Nickelodeon’s iCarly. At 30, she reflects on her long journey with the character she began voicing at 13. Outside of acting, Cosgrove is an executive producer for the iCarly revival.

Kristen Wiig returns as Lucy Wilde, Gru’s wife and partner in crime. Wiig first gained widespread recognition on Saturday Night Live and later became well-known for her breakout role in Bridesmaids. Additionally, she has voiced characters in How to Train Your Dragon and Big Mouth. Beyond her career, Wiig shares twins with her husband, Avi Rothman, and continues to bring her comedic talents to the franchise.

Sofía Vergara adds a new dynamic as Valentina, Maxime Le Mal’s girlfriend and accomplice.

Vergara, originally from Barranquilla, Colombia, became a household name as Gloria in Modern Family. Beyond acting, she’s involved in various business ventures, including a coffee line and a suncare brand. Vergara, a mother of one, is currently dating Justin Saliman after her recent divorce from Joe Manganiello.

Pierre Coffin once again voices the minions, the mischievous yellow sidekicks. Coffin, who also co-directs, continues to bring these beloved characters to life with his distinctive vocal talents.

Newcomer Madison Skyy Polan voices Agnes, Gru’s youngest daughter, known for her love of unicorns. Polan, who began acting at age three, makes her major debut in this role. Her excitement for joining the cast is palpable, adding fresh energy to the character.

Steve Coogan returns as Silas Ramsbottom, the director of the Anti-Villain League. Coogan, a British comedian, has voiced several characters in the franchise. Known for films like Philomena and Alan Partridge, Coogan continues to lend his comedic expertise to the series.

Stephen Colbert joins as Perry Prescott, Gru’s new neighbor. Colbert, best known as the host of The Late Show, brings his sharp wit to this new role. Alongside him is Chloe Fineman as Patsy Prescott, Perry’s wife. Fineman, a Saturday Night Live star, brings a fresh voice to the character, blending humor with a Southern charm.

Finally, Joey King voices Poppy Prescott, Perry and Patsy’s daughter, who dreams of becoming a supervillain.

King, who gained recognition in Ramona and Beezus and The Kissing Booth, brings her versatility to this quirky new character. Married to Steven Piet, King’s enthusiasm for her role shines through in her performance.

With this stellar cast, Despicable Me 4 is poised to deliver another round of laughter and adventure, making it a must-see for fans of all ages.
