Sophie Turner is still grappling with the aftermath of her and Joe Jonas’ split. Eight months after Joe filed for divorce, the Game of Thrones alum opened up about the “shocking” online fallout and how Taylor Swift provided her a “safe space.”
Reflecting on the months following their separation, Sophie shared how speculation about her lifestyle took a toll. “Those were the worst few days of my life,” she told British Vogue on May 15. “I was stuck on set and couldn’t get to my kids in the States. Then, all these hurtful articles started appearing.”
Struggling with “mum guilt,” Sophie emphasized, “I torture myself over every decision I make as a mother. I had to keep reminding myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier.'”
On September 6, just a day after Joe filed for divorce, the couple presented a united front, stating on Instagram, “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives, but this is a united decision, and we hope for privacy for our children.”
However, their divorce quickly turned contentious, with Sophie suing Joe for “wrongful retention” of their kids in New York City, which she later dropped after a custody agreement was reached.
“There were days I didn’t think I could make it,” Sophie confessed. “I was on the phone with my lawyer, feeling defeated. But then I remembered I was fighting for my kids. That gave me strength.”
Despite their improved coparenting dynamic, the split still stings for Sophie. “It’s shocking how people fabricate stories based on a picture,” she told British Vogue. “It felt like watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written. I’m still in shock.”
Fortunately, Sophie found solace in friends like Taylor Swift, who offered her a place to stay in NYC. “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” Sophie shared. “She took my children and me in, providing us with a home and a safe space. I’ve never been more grateful.”
Despite the challenging year, Sophie remains hopeful. “I’m unhappy with how things played out, especially for my children. They’re the victims in all this. But Joe is a great father, and we’re doing our best. I’m confident we’ll figure it out.”
