There are very few things quite like stepping into a museum. To me, it doesn’t matter if it’s one I’ve been to dozens of times, or if it’s the first time I’ve visited (I may have teared up when I went to the British Museum for the first time). Sometimes, it’s just a visit, a way to clear your head or disconnect from technology, and other times, it’s an opportunity to connect with art, history, and the stories that have shaped our world.
If you’re planning a day at the museum, here’s a my personal take on what you can do to make the most of your visit:
Get Lost in the Art and History: Take your time as you wander through the museum’s enchanting halls. Turn off your phone (yeah, I cringed too). Let the artwork and historical artifacts give you a glimpse into different eras and places. It’s a chance to connect with the past and appreciate the beauty of human expression in a way we aren’t normally afforded. So enjoy it!
Listen to the Stories: Museums often offer audio guides or guided tours. This is a personal favorite of mine and I highly recommend signing up for them. The guides provide fascinating insights into the exhibits you wouldn’t get otherwise, helping you see the pieces in a whole new light. Don’t forget to ask about upcoming lectures or discussions either!
Hands-On Adventures: Don’t be shy about trying out interactive exhibits – they aren’t just for kids. Whether it’s solving puzzles, trying on costumes from a bygone era, or conducting your own scientific experiments, these hands-on activities bring history and science to life. Some museums even offer workshops and classes. Participate in one if you can. Whether you’re crafting art, molding pottery, or experimenting with science, it’s a chance to let your creativity flow. And honestly, who doesn’t need a little extra whimsy in their life right now.
Dive into Special Exhibits: Keep an eye out for those temporary, special exhibitions. They often showcase rare collections and captivating themes that you won’t want to miss. I will always scream from the rooftops my love of the traveling Van Gogh exhibits.
Refresh and Shop: I am such a sucker for museum cafes and gift shops. Coffee somehow tastes better after you’ve stuffed your brain with art. Don’t forget to browse the museum shop; you can never have too many knick knacks!
Capture Memories: Most museums allow photography (but always check the rules). Capture your favorite moments, take a selfie or two, and share your trip with friends and family. Who knows, maybe you’ll inspire someone else to make a trip to the museum!
