It’s almost the end of summer and the start of storm season for some parts of the United States. So to help you prepare for the rainy season, here’s what you should pack in a storm emergency kit.
Water and Food
Of course, you should pack some water and food, but how much should you pack? Well, you should have at least a gallon of water per day per person. But since it’s just an emergency storm kit, maybe you could put away some gallons of water that’s ready to grab and go.
As for food, it’s a no-brainer to pack a couple of canned goods, granola bars, cookies, dried fruits, and anything that has a longer shelf-life. And don’t forget to pack in a can-opener, scissors, or if you have it, an army knife.
Medication and First Aid Kit
What most people don’t know is that medicine can last for years before losing its effectiveness. And when you’re in an emergency, you would want to have a kit for dressing wounds. You could put in gauze, some bandaids, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and a sprain kit as well.
As for emergency medicines, you should pack Tylenol, an OTC drug for stomachaches, something for acid reflux, and any medications you are prescribed.
Light and Communications
Never forget the flashlights! Put in extra batteries, powerbanks, a radio walkie-talkie, or any other communication tools as well.
Hygiene products
In case of emergencies and you’ll have to leave your house, be sure to pack something you can clean yourself with. Put some soap, shampoo, feminine products, garbage bags, and toilet paper in your storm emergency kit.
Clothing and Bedding
Of course, you need to pack some clothes and bedding in your storm emergency kit. You never know when you’ll need a fresh change of clothes when you get wet. You might want to pack raincoats or waterproof clothes as well.
Cash
Although it’s easier to just use your phone for payments, in an emergency, cash is still the best. If you just rely on your phone, you might be out of charge or don’t have any reception, so you really need some cash.
Important Documents
When packing for a storm, be sure to hide your important documents in places that are safe and dry. Or you could just bring it with your emergency bag, after all, it won’t take up that much space.
Tools and Supplies
You never know when you’ll need to repair something. Invest in a little toolbag with screwdrivers, a small hammer, and any other tools you can squeeze in there.

To save some money, you can buy your own things to put in your emergency kit. Prioritize the things you know would be vital in holding out or getting help like flashlights radio, or food.
You should have an emergency bag especially if you’re living in areas where hurricanes frequent. Your bag should be placed in an area that’s easy to reach so if you really need it, you can just grab it and go out of the house.
