Apple has officially acquired Datakalab, a French AI company known for its work in algorithm compression and embedded AI systems.
Earlier it was revealed that the company deal was completed in December last year. The acquisition was noted in a European Commission filing spotted by the French publication Challenges (via iPhoneSoft).
While the deal’s financial details are still under wraps, it’s likely part of Apple’s plan to improve on-device AI on upcoming iPhones.
Datakalab History
Datakalab was established in 2016 by Xavier and Lucas Fischer. It mainly focuses on making AI work efficiently without relying on cloud systems—on-device AI.
This fits perfectly with Apple’s focus on privacy, security, and device performance in terms of AI. Datakalab’s expertise in compressing AI algorithms to work well on smartphones and tablets has likely attracted the Cupertino-based tech giant.
Recently, popular Apple Analyst Mark Gurman also stated in his weekly Power On newsletter that Apple will introduce on-device AI features with iOS 18. Apart from that, Apple just announced that it is holding a special ‘Let Loose’ event on May 7 at 7:30 pm IST. Apple’s upcoming event will be virtual. While details are hidden, the launch teaser shows an Apple Pencil, which hints at the arrival of new iPad models and an Apple Pencil next month.
