Apple is reportedly testing its own artificial intelligence tools to challenge trending chatbots like OpenAI, Google Bard and others. The report was confirmed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The iPhone smartphone maker is all set to bring this new Chatbot name “Apple GPT.”
Apple has yet to confirm about the launch details of this new technology but yes it was reported that the company is aiming to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.
Apple GPT Framework
The report says Apple has built its own framework, codenamed “Ajax,” to create large language models, which are AI-based systems that power offerings like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Ajax runs on Google Cloud and was built with Google JAX, the search giant’s machine learning framework, according to Bloomberg.
Apple is leveraging Ajax to create large language models and serve as the foundation for the internal ChatGPT-style tool.
After temporarily pausing the internal rollout of the chatbot due to security concerns surrounding generative AI recently Samsung also did the same thing for its employee who misused company documents. Now, it seems that Apple has extended access to more of its employees.
Nevertheless, obtaining approval remains a prerequisite for utilizing the chatbot. As per Bloomberg’s report, any outputs from the chatbot are strictly prohibited from being used in the development of customer-bound features.
Apple’s workforce has found the chatbot particularly useful in aiding product prototyping. This new chatbot is expected to use summarised text and answer questions based on data it has been trained with. It shares similarities with existing solutions like Bard, ChatGPT, and Bing AI, lacking any distinctive features that set it apart from the current commercially available options.
As companies like Google, Microsoft and Meta moved quickly to release generative AI products to the public, Apple has remained somewhat quiet on the AI front. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that although the tech giant would add AI to more of its offerings, it would do so on a “thoughtful basis.”
