Volkswagen’s iconic Transporter van in its electric avatar will debut next year. This is not based on California camper but rather a whole newly built platform with Ford. Volkswagen’s Transporter is considered to be one of the top-selling vans of all time. This substantially makes it the right candidate for the electric era.
While Transport has been in production for almost 70 years, this is a huge time. While it attracts hippies, surfers, travelers, and people from around the globe. Earlier it took out components from the Beetle. However, its major feat was its floor which creates a spacious open-air space.
Apart from this, due to the interior space, it didn’t require much longer for ice cream vendors, emergency services, and others to start using custom versions. The fourth generation Transporter T4 came in the US with the label “Eurovan” in 1992. Notably, the same is VW’s first camper van with a front engine model, and pop-up roof tent elements are yet to be used in today’s time.
At the same time, the Eurovan created a name for itself in the US camping community, and VW grabbed it from the market. The decision was made out of slow sales and unsupportive costs. Meanwhile, the best-selling Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle is pending another upgrade for the coming year.
Volkswagen to come with an electric Transporter along with Ford
According to Autocar, the next-gen Volkswagen Transporter will debut next year on a newly developed platform with Ford, offering an electric variant for the first time.
Furthermore, the electric Transport will be based at Ford’s Otosan factory. Whereby, the same E-transit is built for the European market. Also, the VW will offer the same variants that Ford offers for the Transit. It comprises all-electric, hybrid, and gas options. As per the report, the electric Transporter will be at least on par since it is coming with Ford’s 236-mile range.
So far, Ford has not disclosed the full specs for its E-Transit Custom. The things that are known are its 214 max hp and 306 lb-ft of torque. As per the Volkswagen commercial vehicles CEO Carsten Intra, as he told Autocar the new electric van will be unique from Ford’s. Intra added:
Although they are similar, we have a different car to [Ford’s]. It has been judged internally too, even at Ford, and everyone has judged it as better.
