VW has disclosed an electric variant of its classic GTI hot hatch. Although it is just a concept as of now, VW reveals that the all-electric ID.GTI is planned for final production.
The electric VW ID.GTI concept was unveiled recently in advance of the IAA auto show in Munich, Germany. The original Golf GTI was released in 1976, this was the first VW that utilized fuel injection. Therefore the model name is entitled to the Grand Touring Injection. VW expanded the GTI placement to performance-oriented models. Also, the VW Golf GTI has been famous as an economical yet quick hot hatch in the segment.
At the same time, while to place this designation as a future electric model is a big task. VW stated that the new ID.GTI will continue to use the classic naming convention. Despite the absence of a fuel injection system, replacing “injection” with “intelligence.” The “I” now indicates the “intelligent thinking in the sports car world,” as per VW.
ID.GTI Concept
The ID.GTI concept is dependent on the ID.2all, the same is a small and inexpensive electric hatchback. The 2all is supposed to come under 25,000 Euros. The company hasn’t revealed the price yet for the ID. GTI. At this point, we are quite sure that it will be more, but starting from an inexpensive platform is a good indication.
Apart from this, we don’t have more specs to mention. It’s an inch taller than the Golf GTI, which is two inches wider and seven inches shorter in length. And because of this shorter length, it has a little less rear cargo space than the Golf GTI. Whereas, the more cargo space as the seats folded down and they are positioned on a bit larger tires and wheels.
According to VW, “the decision has been taken that [the ID. GTI] will go into production,” but so far we have no date when it will going to happen. However, the concept appears to have far, in terms of external design language whereas as far as the interior is concerned it’s certainly not finished. The same is true with the powertrain which is also assumed not to be finished, as we don’t have to reveal.
