June proved to be a month of joy for the German automotive market. As it experienced a significant growth (280,139 ) which is about 25 percent year-over-year in new passenger car registrations. In the first six months of 2023, about 1,396,870 new cars were registered. This comes to be 12.8 percent year-over-year sales.
When it comes to the plug-in electric car segment, then it also gaining popularity. However, it divides between BEVs and PHEVs. And both of these segments have different market dynamics. The total plug-in electric car registrations in June is 68,918. This is 24.6 percent of the total volume with respect to 26 percent in the same duration of the previous year.
On the other hand, all-electric car registrations add up to 52,988, which is 64 percent of year-over-year sales. Now this was enough to put a hold on 18.9 percent of the market as compared to 14.4 percent of the previous year.

Plug-in Electric car registration, June 2023
As of now this year, more than 299,000 passenger plug-in electric cars have been registered in Germany. While this is two percent low with respect to the previous year’s numbers.

- BEVs: 220,244 – up 32% at 15.8% market share
- PHEVs: 79,065 – down 43% at 5.7% market share
- Total: 299,309 – down 2% at 21.4% market share
Top brands
In the month of June, the three brands that have the maximum number of new plug-in electric car registrations were Volkswagen, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz respectively. Additionally, Volkswagen was also in the top position in the BEVs segment after Tesla. While Mercedes-Benz continues to be the leader in the PHEVs category.

All at once, Volkswagen continues to be the top brand throughout the year. Whereas, Tesla now comes before Mercedes-Benz. However, if we only consider BEVs then Tesla is a little ahead of Volkswagen.

Talking about best-selling plug-in electric car in June then it is Tesla Model Y. This recorded 6,098 new registrations and 27,825 year-to-date.

Furthermore, the Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5 duo also records a very good result of 5,152 units in June. But in terms of year-to-date numbers which is 18,377.
The third most preferred BEV model in June was the Fiat 500 electric which holds a registration of 3,004 units. This indicates that it is ahead of the Audi Q4 e-tron and Skoda Enyaq iV YTD respectively.
