Qualcomm is all set to launch the next-generation flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, in October this year. Don McGuire, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Qualcomm, unveiled this information during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 through a post on X (previously, Twitter).
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: Expectations and Rumours
According to the latest information, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 mobile platform will succeed the current flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset (also introduced in October 2023) and is said to come with several enhancements over its predecessor.
McGuire specified that the chipset would include Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU and hinted at improved NPU performance as part of the ongoing evolution of their NPU narrative.
An earlier leak unveiled the performance of an engineering sample of the alleged Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. The chip purportedly ran the game Genshin Impact smoothly for 45 minutes at 1080p resolution, maintaining a stable 60fps frame rate.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm officially launched its latest flagship 5G modem – Snapdragon X80. Designed for smartphones, extended reality (XR) devices, PCs, vehicles and industrial IoT devices, the X80 5G modem features a dedicated AI processor. This processor is equipped with a tensor accelerator to increase data transfer speed, coverage and performance while reducing latency.
In addition, the new modem also integrates the third-generation 5G AI Suite Gen 3 to further optimize coverage and positioning accuracy. Qualcomm claims that when the X80 is connected to a millimeter wave network, power consumption can be reduced by 10% and positioning accuracy improved by 30%.
