After two months of FSD V12, Tesla finally began to push its FSD 12.1.2 update (version number 2023.44.30.12) to non-employee car owners, blogger Whole Mars Catalog has tested this in practice.
Although Musk has previously promised that V12 will be “not a beta” when it is officially launched, FSD is still displayed as “Beta” after this update, which is unexpected but reasonable.
According to Musk’s previous notice, a major change in Tesla FSD V12 is the elimination of more than 300,000 lines of code that previously controlled the vehicle’s FSD functions , and further reliance on neural networks, which means that the system reduces its reliance on hard-coded programming.
For the first time, FSD V12 uses neural networks to control steering, acceleration and braking, but only to detect objects and determine their properties.
FSD V12 claims to represent a major leap forward in Tesla’s FSD technology, which Musk describes as “end-to-end artificial intelligence” using a “visual input, control output” approach.
Musk also conducted a live broadcast of FSD V12 last year in a Model S based on HW3 hardware. Later, the Palo Alto Police Department in the United States stated that it was illegal for Musk to live broadcast on his mobile phone while driving.
Musk also emphasized that “navigation/map data is actually not even required to drive a car. Navigating in a parking lot is a good example, where without map data, a car can roam until it finds a parking lot, or Know where the entrance/exit of the mall is and then drop you off or pick you up.” Additionally, he demonstrated parking in an on-street parking space with a ditch in front, and the dashboard message indicated that the vehicle could detect water.
